ALS ice bucket challenge or Ice bucket challenge is an activity in which the person who takes challenge dump bucket of ice water over his/her head, record video and post online and further nominate others to take the challenge. Those who get challenged from someone have 24 hrs to do it else they have to donate to the ALS Association. Donation amounts are 35$, 60$ 100$ or any value but not less than 5$. Purpose of Ice Bucket challenge is to raise awareness about ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and raise fund.
What is ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) ?
ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a progressive neuro degenerative disease. It is often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”, after the famous baseball player who was diagnosed with it. ALS is also known as motor neuron disease (MND). It affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. ALS often begins with muscles twitching and weakness in an arm or leg, sometimes with slurring of speech. Eventually, ALS can affect the ability of person to control the muscles needed to move, speak, eat and breathe. In the later stage, Patients are totally paralyzed. ALS can not be cured and leads to death. In US, More than 5600 people per year and an average of 15 people per day are newly diagnosed with ALS.
“ALS Association” is a non-profit organization, which provides assistance to the people affected with ALS and leads in global research. ALS Association’s headquartered is in Washington DC and it was established in 1985.
When it went viral ?
It went Viral, when a 29-year-old Pete Frates challenged a few friends in Massachusetts. The former Boston College baseball player has battled ALS for several years. Frates is now bounded to a wheelchair and can no longer speak. But he’s also made it his life’s mission to raise awareness of the disease. To that end, his friends introduced him to the Ice Bucket Challenge. On July 31st, he posted a video on Facebook asking others to do the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS.
“It’s all over the place,” said Beth Hawes, development coordinator for the ALS Association’s North Carolina chapter. “Celebrities, politicians, athletes – everyone’s getting involved.”

Famous personalities are seeing this challenge with different perspective and expressing their view on the campaign. Where Dr. Brian O Neil has accused it to make adverse effect on health, famous Baywatch star Pamela Anderson refused to take part in challenge because of the use of Animals in ALS Research experiment. Some criticism came from drought region saying “It’s a waste of water”.
Well the campaign is going brilliantly and the ALS Organization is amazingly grateful for the outpouring support from all over the world.
